Clicker-Training your Cats? Has anyone done this?

Hey Ya'll,
So I was looking on the internet (preparing for my kitty to come home with me this afternoon) and I found all this info on clicker-training your cats. Have you done this before? I was going to do this with Sarah (my kitty) but I wasn't sure how much time to give her to adjust to my house, and me as well. (and I guess partly Mom since she lives here too, even though I'm gonna be her primary caretaker) but I downloaded the clicker training for cats book from bookshare and it looks quite interesting. (didn't know this was possible for a cat) but it would be nice to get her to come, and roll over and sit, and not use her claws as rough when she's playing.... as well as getting off tables and not scratching on furchinure... among other things.. so I downloaded it last night and started reading it. It definitely is interesting. Has anyone done this with their cat before? If so, does this really work? and what sorts of things have you taught your cat to do with clicker-training? and any more tips would be appreciated! Thanks for your in put and for reading!
Amber

Ok, so I caved in and bought the I-Clicker training 5 pack.. in case I lose one or something lol... has anyone done this before with their cat? I'm gonna try it and see how it goes. We never tried it on our dogs, but they are a difficult breed to train as it is... (I don't live with them anymore though) they live with my Dad... but when we tried to train them, it was like hell on wheels lol... that's why I am a cat person.. and+ I've always loved cats more then dogs... not that I dislike them, I just love kitties. :)

Hi! I clicker trained my tabby cat Rajah to meow more. It took him four months and now he's a chatterbox! So yes, it does work. It takes a little more time depending on the cat's purrsonality, but it can be done and is successful! Also, Rajah thought it was fun and he almost always wanted to do it. It helps if you use treats. I used dental treats for kitties. He loves them!

I imagine trying to clicker train a cat would be something like trying to clicker train a teenager.

It really does work. I hear the proof every morning when Rajah says good morning in his own way and then proceeds to demand food. LOL!

hahaha good to hear that it has worked out for those whom have used this method of training and I reckon it would of been useful for me when I had to train my cats to use a cat door, smiles.

Hey! I've sort of slacked in the training department, I've been away a lot, so I've slacked... think I need to start training Sara again though really soon!!! :) Aww that's awesome that you have a tabby.. Sara is a tabby too!! :) What color is your cat? Mine is what they call a blue smoke tabby... :) but from what I did do, it worked for her when I trained her... teaching her to put her nose to a stick worked quite well... she's a pretty smart cat, so doing the click then treat thing really works for her.. she's not a stupid cat, so she got it only after a few sessions. When I have more time, I will definitely start the clicker training process again and let ya'll know how Saras progress is going! :)

oh cool and yeah it be nice to hear how it goes when you return to it though it is good that it worked when you were doing the training and no cats are very smart, smiles.

I've continued the training... and it works when I use it... lol. Although I'm not as consistant as I should be lol... everyone keeps asking me what the clickers are for lol... and I'm like traing Sara... lol... but I'm glad that I was able to re-start it because it's definitely working. :)

Yeah, I can't wait to rezoom the clicker-training!! :) I think she and other kittys really bennifit from this, especially since they can't understand such things as 'Good Girl, Sara!!' etc lol.. so with the click they know that they are gonna get a treat if they do something good. :) My Mom wanted to click for her when she was being bad, ex: not coming when we/I called her.. but I told her not to that its only to reward good behavior. So far Sara has been behaving quite nicely. :) continuing the trainging ASAP!

i'm glad to hear it has been working out so nicely for you and let us know more on her progress when you resume training, smiles.

Hey! Sorry about not replying sooner! I've had some unforeseen eye issues of my own to deal with. Rajah is grey with brown stripes and white paws. He has yellow eyes. He looks like a little raccoon! LOL! I almost named him Meeko, but he didn't go for it. His name suits him though, believe me. He has the catitude of a tiger. LOL! I love him so much! I thank God every day for bringing Rajah and I together. Rajah actually chose me. I mean I love him to pieces, but he was the one to choose me in the shelter when I came to see the kittens.

Awww that's really sweet.. :) Yeah, same with Sara.. I mean, the other kitties were cute, but she let me pet her, she wasn't into explooring the room, and more interested in me... and she was purring.. not only that, but when I bought her home for the first time, she was purring.. and+ she is really sweet. I'm trying to let her know that it's okay to go onto my lap. She's getting really good about me holding her... when I pick her up, she just purs and purs.. but it's only for like a minute at a time, and then she'll want me to put her down, of which I do, but in the last few days she's been letting me hold her, and she purs when I hold her, instead of meowing. So I'm hoping that she'll eventually let me hold her... as far as going on my lap, she'll walk on my lap, and then quickly get off, but like I said, I'm trying to teach her that it's okay that I'm not going to hurt her.. she was a stray, so I don't know if she'll fully sit on my lap, but I'm just glad that she is letting me pick her up and hold her because that's huge for her, she definitely wasn't doing that weeks ago. But when you spend 24-7 with your kittie, I guess that's what happends. :) :D anyways, sorry to get off topic, thought I'd share this.. Clicker training, I don't know. My Mom tried to use it on Sara when I was out of town, and Sara just freaked. (keep in mind that Sara doesn't like my Mom) I mean she's not mean towards her, she just runs and freaks whenever she comes in the house, but she'll let her pet her, for a few seconds.. but I think (and she also thinks) that it's because she doesn't have the pacients to play with her for that long where as her boyfriend does, she really likes him, and me of course, but she's a little skitish around my Mom still... I mean she'll sit on the sofa with me, and then hear the garrage door open and bult because she knows that my Mom is coming lol... but she really is a sweet kittie though, and once I resume clicker training (and yes I will, because it didn't freak her out when I've been doing it) I'll keep everyone updated on how it's going. That's like Rajah. His threshold for being held is growing because I'm showing him I mean no harm. Petting him is becoming more enjoyable for both of us as well. He was also a stray, but I have it from the person who found him that she doesn't think he was out there on his own for very long. And he passed all his temprement tests, so he is definitely friendly. But he still needs to work on trust. And that's okay. I love him and I'll give him all the time he needs.

Awww that's awesome! :) You can give a kitty temperment tests? Wonder if they did that at the shelter? hmmm.. they told me that she hisses when people pick her up, but not me lol... they also told us that she doesn't like to be pet for very long, but not with me lol. I don't think that Sara was at the shelter for very long, either... I think since May or so? But I could be wrong though.. she's social when she wants to be, otherwise, she'll hide, then come out.. she's been really good about not going under the bed, though... she tries to get into my closet, (she started climbing up it) and I had to get her down and re-directed her to her scratching post. for the last few days all she has been doing is purring non-stop. :) :D yeah I too am trying to get her to trust me and other humans that I live with so that she knows it's okay.. Has anyone tried the spirit escents from that Jackson Galixy trainer? (he was on animal planet with that show my cat from hell) it's quite interesting to watch the eppisodes... lol maybe I can learn something about my kittie. :) but I'm continuing to bond with her as the days progress. :) and since I'm in between jobs right now, it'll make my bonding time with her even stronger. :)

They probably did. As long as the cats up for adoption aren't aggressive to the point of making you bleed, they pass. I mean I'm pretty sure they worked with Sarah a little bit too. It was different with Rajah because he was friendly from the time he was found and he stayed that way for the most part. I'm sure he had his moments of put me down now, he has them with me. But now they're fewer and far between. And he doesn't use nipping to get his way much anymore. Sarah will get there. It just takes a lot of hard work and patience.

Thanks. Yeah I'm sure she will. She'll let me hold her, when there's not other people around.. she won't let me for long periods of time though... she does this thing where she'll hide under the blanket on my bed, and she'll make it like a little cave if you will... lol.
